Jenni McGrogan's Showcase

Welcome to my Showcase Page!  This page highlights some of the work that I have done throughout my degree work.  Some of the artifacts that are highlighted include, but are not limited to a Stand Alone Instructional Resource (StAIR), an online classroom, and a podcast. As you scroll down the page you will notice these artifacts and many more and I invite you to take a look at the work I have done.

Tech & Learning

Technology & Learning explores the many ways that technology could inhance and hinder student learning.  The affordances and constraints always need to be taken into consideration when evaluating any piece of technology to be used in the classroom. Understanding TPACK (technological pedigolocial content knowledge) can allow teachers weigh all their options when considering a use of technology. Using a wordle can help the teacher gauge what the student already may know about a subject area and be able to teach according to prior knowledge.  This would be a great way and creative way to allow students to express themselves.

Innovative Tech in Education

I developed this StAIR (Stand Alone Instructional Resource) as an example of how technology can help us with issues and concerns going on in our own classrooms. By creating a StAIR (Stand Alone Instructional Resource) it could alleviate the boredom that many students can experience in P.E./other classes.  My biggest problem was that students just wanted to "play" but not learn the fundamentals.  I created this Soccer StAIR to allow them to watch some fundamental skills and learn a few things on their own without being bored listening to me talk during their valuable "play" time.  Click on the powerpoint image to preview the StAIR by downloading.

Teaching with Technology

Sometimes our students just don't like to be lectured and I can't blame them. With this video, I demonstrate how teachers can grab the attention of their students through a use of technology.   I chose to create a brief introduction to smoking using PhotoStory3.  Through the use of pictures and my voice, students were able to understand the effects of smoking on their body.  I feel as though with this topic in particular, visuals work the best and really got the ball of questions and curiosity rolling!  Click on the photo to view this short clip.

Health Online

There is a science behind how we learn and what attracts us to information and help us retain it.  In creating module(s) within any subject area, it can give all learners the opportunity to learn, ask questions and feel comfortable while doing so. While creating this online class, it was fascinating to me as I had created all of my materials for my general classroom so it was nice to re-create them in a different format for learning.  I really enjoyed creating this and feel that web design in education can be taken to another level.  The concept of online learning is starting to take hold and this is good to know the structure and formatting for online learners and the difference it holds to a general brick and mortar setting.  Click on the image to be taken to my website.

E-Portfolios

Having an online portfolio is the easiest way to be noticed and have your work highlighted.  This way of cataloging all of the work that one has completed gives educators an edge in their profession and really a great example for students to be led by.  Capturing pertinent assignments that could relate to a student furthering their education can also give them a little extra something in the post high school scene.  There are many free platforms for educators and students a like to use.  Some examples are google, weebly, wordpress and wix.  Click on the photo to be taken to my home page of my portfolio.

Classroom Site

This was not a required assignment for any of my MAET classes but I was inspired to really get a classroom site going.  I thought it would help forgetful students with homework assignments, reminders, and help with communication with parents.  It was one of the first sites that I created and was proud that my students would log on and email me because they forgot the link.  I felt that it was the beginning of training students to use an online resource as part of their education. (I no longer work at this institution, however it highlights my abilities to create a classroom site.)  Click on the photo to be connected to class!

Understanding and Learning

Most of us know that there is a difference between listening and hearing, right?  Well, there is also a difference of students learning content and understanding it.  Most teachers always look for specific key words or cues when checking for understanding.  I created and edited a Podcast that proved the theory of understanding and learning with the subject area of conception.  I used Audacity as my recording and editing tool.  Students had taken or were in the process of taking my class and finished the unit therefore had "learned" all of the material.  I asked each student the same questions and got many different responses.  I enjoyed doing this assignment and hearing what my students had to say!  (Language used in this podcast is mature) Click on the photo to listen in.

Effective use of Technology

When considering using technology in an everyday lesson there are many things you want to keep in mind.  How will the students/educator learn to use this technology?  How will it affect what they learn?  Does this technology make learning easier or more fun and engaging?  When I was working in a group setting we felt that using Edmodo in the classroom would help students feel comfortable with learning as it looked very similar to the social media platform Facebook.  We created a 5 part video tutorial on how educators could set up their accounts and help them become more familiar using this techology that may help benefit their class.  Click on each part to view the tutorial.
